Vaping facts and guidance
Vaping: Key Information
Vaping involves using an e-cigarette, a battery-powered device that heats a liquid to produce vapour, which is inhaled. These liquids often contain nicotine, flavourings, and other chemicals.
Key message
Vaping is less harmful than smoking and can be an effective quitting aid for adult smokers. However, it is not risk-free and is discouraged among children and young people.
Regulation (UK)
- It is illegal to sell nicotine vapes or tobacco to anyone under 18. Underage sales can be reported to Trading Standards.
- Vaping should be discouraged for children and young people who have never smoked. Long-term health effects are still being studied (NICE).
- Nicotine is addictive and can impact brain development in young people (ASH).
- Disposable vapes have been banned. From 1 June 2025, single-use vapes are illegal in the UK.
- E-cigarettes are consumer products, not licensed medicines, and are not approved for medical use (UK Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016).
- Clear smoke-free policies, consistent messaging, and education help protect young people’s health.
