Implementing a smoke free and vape free policy

We recommend that your setting has a smoke-free policy which also covers vaping and use of e-cigarettes.

Getting started:

Involve the whole school community! A successful policy is one that reflects the views and needs of pupils, teachers, support staff, parents/guardians, and community partners.

Here are some ways to start:

  • Discuss the policy at Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings and school governor boards.
  • Share drafts on the school website and newsletters.
  • Host a pupil focus group to gather ideas and feedback.

When staff and pupils help shape the policy, they’re more likely to understand it, support it, and help uphold it.

What to include

Your policy should clearly outline:

  1. Smoke/vape-free zones: Define which areas of the school premises are covered, including outdoor spaces like playing fields or areas near school gates.
  2. Times of enforcement: Include school trips, after-school events, and meetings.
  3. Support for quitting: Signpost services for staff, parents, and pupils who want help to quit smoking or vaping.

Communication

Make sure everyone knows about the policy and where to find it:

  • Publish it on your school website and social media.
  • Display it on notice boards and include it in newsletters.
  • Share it with school clubs, mentors, and sports teams.

Send a letter to parents/guardians that:

  • Explains the policy.
  • Highlights the health, academic, and social benefits.
  • Encourages their support in enforcing it.

Launching Your Policy

A formal launch event is a great way to raise awareness and mark the start of your smoke/vape-free policy. Invite pupils, staff, parents, and community partners to get involved and show their support.
